Ski area Schnalstal Glacier

The glacier ski area in the Schnalstal valley offers winter sports enthusiasts a choice of 42 kilometres of slopes and 11 lifts. The cable cars boast short waiting times, whilst the ski area, situated at an altitude of up to 3,212 metres, offers excellent snow conditions. The Schnalstal Glacier Cable Car and chairlifts take you directly from Kurzras into the ski area. The kilometres of slopes are evenly distributed across blue, red and black runs, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Leisure skiers will feel particularly at home on the wide glacier slopes with easy and medium difficulty levels. The slopes near the Hintereis chairlift enjoy plenty of glacier sunshine, and the red runs near the Lazaunhütte are varied, winding idyllically through the forest. Experienced skiers will find a particular challenge on the black runs below the Glacier lifts. The very youngest skiers, on the other hand, are gently introduced to skiing in Tiroli’s Kinderland next to the valley station of the glacier cable car, with magic carpets and a ski carousel.

A highlight and the crowning glory of the day’s skiing is the 8 km-long descent down to Kurzras. Those who aren’t fans of classic runs on the piste can head into the open terrain. Freeride courses are available in Kurzras.

The glacier is also a popular training ground for international national ski and cross-country teams. The conditions here are ideal for effective high-altitude training, and so, from as early as September, the Grawand slope is transformed into race courses dotted with blue and red gates. Around 40 different course layouts are available on the training grounds, and since 2015 there has even been a hire service for gate poles and drills.

A recommended excursion for ski tourers is the Ötzi Glacier Tour. This high-alpine glacier tour starts at the top station of the Schnalstal Glacier Cable Car and leads across the Hochjochferner (i.e. the Schnalstal Glacier) to the Tisenjoch at 3,200 m, where the famous Ötzi mummy was found. There is even a memorial stone here dedicated to the “Uomo del Similaun”. From spring onwards, this 7- to 8-hour circuit is also an attractive route for hikers.

Rules of conduct on ski pistes in Italy

To use the ski areas, you must have valid liability insurance that covers damage or injury to third parties. This can also be taken out on site for individual days. Skiing while intoxicated (0.5 per mille or higher BAC) is prohibited and is punishable by heavy fines. To reduce the risk of injury, wearing a helmet is compulsory for everyone (regardless of age, on all ski runs, in snow parks and on toboggan runs). Anyone who does not comply with the helmet requirement will be fined or banned from the slopes.

Après ski Schnalstal Glacier

Val Senales offers you the perfect environment for a varied holiday. This also applies to the après ski programme. You can round off your day's skiing with a mulled wine in the Bussl or in the glacier bar. In the evening, you can continue on to Leo's Pub or the Platzl Bar, for example. Or you can simply treat yourself to delicious South Tyrolean delicacies or of course a good Italian pizza in one of the restaurants.

For those who prefer an active leisure programme, you can explore the beautiful Schnalstal Valley with its quaint villages on four winter hiking trails or on a snowshoe hiking tour. Or take a walk through the monastery village of Karthaus and follow in the footsteps of the former Allerengelberg monastery. In the "Texel" sports zone, ice skaters frolic on the natural ice rink with floodlights in winter.

The 3 km-long toboggan run in the ski area, which you can easily reach by chair lift, is a racy experience. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you can end the day in the Olympic indoor pool in Kurzras. In addition to a sports pool, it also offers a sauna area, a steam bath and a massage area. Larger bathing areas can be reached quickly by car from the Schnalstal Valley: the Naturns adventure bath, the AquaForum Latsch or the Meran thermal baths, for example.

Those who want to add culture to their leisure programme on holiday will also find plenty to do in the Schnalstal Valley. In the Schnals ArcheoParc, for example, you can follow in the footsteps of Ötzi, whose mummy was found by a German couple in 1991 not far from the Schnalstal ski area. There is also an exhibition about this and the glacier in the mountain station of the glacier railway. If you would like to meet Ötzi "in person", you can also take a trip to Bolzano, around 70 kilometres away, where the "Iceman" can be seen in the Archaeological Museum.
